HEMP CLIPPER SHIPS Given the long history of the sailing ship, the era of the full-fledged clippers was destined to be remarkably short. It began for the American ships in the 1840's. The American clipper was designed for speed to make the voyage around the horn of South America to the West Coast of California, sometimes done in under 100 days. In a short period the clipper won the hearts of ship lovers and artists of the sea for its speed and beauty. Hemp was there. |
