LETTERS ON FOOD

LETTER SUBMITTED TO THE LOS ANGELES TIMES EDITOR:

RE: EATING FISH AND HEART ATTACKS: FACING NATURE'S LIMITS.

Please wake up editors. In a fine editorial, Facing Nature's Limits, Jan. 3, 1998, you state,  we will have to take hard steps to slow resource consumption to maintain continued supplies. The new fishing limits, require commercial fishers to reduce by up to 65% their haul of several species, etc."

On page A8, Jan. 7, 1998, the headline reads, "Eating Fish Protects Heart, Study Finds."  A team of scientists found that substances specific to fish known as OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS, impart a protective effect on the heart. A diet rich in fish helps keep the heart's rhythm in sync.

In another L.A. Times report:   "UCLA Study Finds Fish Oil May Reduce Risk of Breast Cancer," researchers found:   "Asian women have about one-third as much breast cancer as American women. Their breasts also contain a higher amount of a FATTY ACID called OMEGA-3, which is found primarily in fish. Some researchers think this increased level of OMEGA-3 may exert a protective effect in the breasts."

OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS (OILS), are not specific to fish as reported, but are found in abundance in hemp seed which is 30% oil. Hemp seed oil is 56.9% OMEGA-3 FATTY ACID, making it the highest source in the vegetable kingdom. Other circulatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and sickle cell anemia are reported by patients to be helped by hemp seed oil. Because of Cannabis hemp prohibition, hemp seed cannot be grown by American farmers. However, it can and is being imported and used.

Please print a correction so that people will know the results of their prohibition policies:  more cancer and heart disease, more misinformation from science and the media, more pressure on overburdened natural resources.
